The First Breath: From Serenity to Resistance

At an altitude of 750 meters, the wind does not blow; it carves. For forty years, I sought the silent "ONE-NESS," but the frozen thickets of Yeongwol have shattered that tranquility.
In this sub-zero void, I faced Heidegger’s Angst—not as a concept, but as the raw shivering of the soul. My aluminum nozzle is no longer a tool; it is a weapon of existence, driving "Iron Lines" into the burlap to prove that I am still here, still human, and still resisting the seamless erasure of the digital age. Look into the Bi-baek (the interstice). There, in the gaps of gray, the divine breath still lingers.

MAQOM: Chronicles of Resistance

The Wilderness at 750 Meters:   A Site of Ontological Struggle   I stand at an altitude of 750 meters in Yeongwol, where the winter wind at -15°C strips everything to its bare essence. For 40 years, I have navigated the realms of abstraction, but here, in this frozen wilderness, I have encountered the "Winter Thicket"—not as a landscape, but as a stark portrait of the "Human Situation". As we enter the era of seamless AI, where human presence feels increasingly ephemeral, my work serves as a visceral record of resistance.

The Iron Line: Jung-bong and the Burlap Canvas  Rejecting the soft docility of the brush, I grasp the rigid aluminum nozzle of a paint tube. This tool, an "external bone," allows me to drive "Iron Lines" directly into the raw burlap. Through the technique of Jung-bong (Central Tip), I manifest a three-dimensional exigency—lines that are not merely drawn but are calcified breaths, "Ruah" blown into dry bones. It is an act of carving existence out of the void.

MAQOM: The Sacred Interstice (Interstice)  The essence of this series lies in the Interstice (Bi-baek)—the gaps between the masses of gray. This is MAQOM, a sacred place where divinity dwells amidst human suffering. Following the thoughts of Heschel and Heidegger, I find that the more humanity is marginalized by its own creations, the louder these "Interstices" must speak. My layers of gray are not erasures of failure; they are the "ghosts of time," proving that even in the face of an uncertain future, the human spirit remains unyielding.

Oneness :  A Glimpse into the Interstice of Unity

The union of one reality with another is an impossible possibility. The scission of one into two is a possible impossibility. This interplay of union and separation is a paradox that transcends both logic and mathematics. It is a space imbued with a mysterious, indefinite anticipation where presence and absence, integration and dissolution, immanence and transcendence, longing and disillusionment are inextricably enshrined.Between these dualities lies a realm of ambivalence—impervious to the moral dualism of "union as good, separation as evil" and impenetrable by mere phenomenology. Just as one dreams of a detached unity or a unified separation between subject and object, Lee Jai-kyung’s oeuvre presents amorphous, minimal forms that appear simultaneously severed and sutured by a slender interstice. This interstice, though fine and delicate, commands a potent, mystical presence that arrests the viewer's gaze. The two color fields stand back-to-back yet face-to-face, creating a palpable tension as they yearn for an eternally impossible reconciliation between the Self and the Other, phenomenon and essence, the ideal and the existential.Ultimately, Lee’s gaze is fixed on the eternal blankness between two realities—the thread-like interstice—and the mystical potentiality of what occurs within it. The physical labor poured into the texture and color of the planes serves, in truth, to accentuate this very interstice. The artist is consumed by the mystical phenomenon where two independent realities find communion within this fissure. If 'one' and 'two' are human and existential, 'three' is spiritual and divine. This interstice is the 'Third Realm,' a demilitarized zone, a sacrosanct territory between two realities. It is a Sacred Void that only the divine can inhabit. This void is the invisible, eternal domain of God, transcending space and time, simultaneously triggering the separation and union of two realities. This is the consistent destination of Lee Jai-kyung’s artistic universe. In these works, through the dynamic mechanics between the intense color fields and the mystical, slender interstice, she profoundly renders the state of Oneness.

Confessional Thoughts by Dr. Bongkyung Lim (Ph.D. in Theology) on the Works of Jaikyung Lee

Return to the Origin

The Eternal Return to the Primordial Source
It is a theological axiom that the teleological destiny of life is a reversion to its Origin. Yet, even beyond the sacred, an ontological homing instinct breathes within the deepest recesses of the human psyche—a yearning to return to the source of being. The great philosophers of all ages, who treated life and art with profound reverence, have always attempted the reckless yet sublime excavation of this "Ground of Being." They sought Substance over phenomena, the Idea over reality, and the unitary, austere Abstraction over the chaotic concrete. The pilgrimage to the Origin mandates a radical rupture from the mundane: a shedding of calcified traditions, cultural stasis, and the inertia of common sense.

Jaikyung Lee: A Thalesian Mediator of the Arche
The oeuvre of Jaikyung Lee stands as a testament to this pursuit. Like Carl Jung, she is fixated upon the "primordial image"—the psychological knot that acts as a conduit for psychic energy. Like Kant, she displays a tenacious attachment to the Noumenon—that which is approachable yet perpetually elusive. She is an artist anchored in the Arche, tracing the genealogy of the cosmos back to its inception, a Thalesian painter who interrogates the ultimate essence beyond the veil of sensory experience.
Jaikyung Lee is now navigating a transition from the Pathos of her earlier expressionism to the contemplative Logos—the cosmic principle that undergirds existence. She is a Faustian figure, wrestling to embrace and decipher this Logos. Theologically, she is visualizing the preamble of the Gospel of John: "In the beginning [Arche] was the Word [Logos]." Her thirty-year painterly odyssey unfolds as a seamless panorama of this return, unraveling the knots of her unconscious against the backdrop of an ontological context.

Period I (1986-1994): The Nihilistic Abyss of Existence
Lee’s early works serve as a visceral mirror to the historical trauma of the 1980s—the Gwangju Democratization Movement and the June Struggle. They are the self-reflective projections of a generation thirsting for truth and liberty. In these works, we witness the artist’s nihilistic existentialism confronting the "wretchedness of being"—the isolated individual thrown into the abyss of history.
As critic Choi Byung-sik observed, the "gaunt bodies and resistant, upward gazes" signal a deviation from convention. These are the portraits of the alienated—the madman, the patient, the exile. Works such as The Sound of Crying and Grave resonate with a Munch-like scream, a stark, minimal composition erupting with accusation and sorrow.

Period II (1995-2000): The Choreography of the Void
If Period I depicted the phenomena of existence, Period II interprets its nature. Turning inward from a distorted world, Lee confronted the abyss within. In the depths of anxiety and finitude, she discovered Nothingness (Mu) and the Void (Heo). Paradoxically, she exorcised this emptiness through dance. Her somnambulistic figures do not dance in joy but in a ritual of survival.
Critic Kim Sang-chul noted that these "distorted naked bodies" possess an "ascetic solemnity." They are shrinking into their own abyss, tamed by the human condition. Yet, through the act of painting this "wind blowing inside," Lee sublimates despair into the rhythmic language of the body, foreshadowing the liberation to come.

Period III (2001-2014): Resurrection and the Poetics of the Seed
A radical shift in methodology marks the third period. Through intense self-gazing, Lee transcends the distorted self to focus on the "Seed"—an external objective correlative. The seed becomes a vessel of cosmic potency, its infinite potential visualized through vibrant chromatic variations.
In her mid-phase (2006-2009), the inherent vitality of the seed ruptures its shell, expanding vertically and horizontally. Critic Hong Gai likened her brushwork to a spiritual mantra, creating "living color fields" that pulse with religious intensity. In works like Song of Songs (2013) and Delight (2014), this life energy swells into an overwhelming symphony of joy, traversing the celestial and the terrestrial in a rhythmic dance of resurrection.

Period IV (2015-Present): Dialectical Synthesis and the Pursuit of the Ultimate
In Hegelian terms, if the historical and self-reflection of the early periods formed the Thesis, and the objective resurrection of the third period was the Antithesis, then the current phase is the Synthesis. It is the pursuit of the a priori Origin—the Arche—which grants eternal order and beauty to the chaos of existence. This Origin is not a categorized concept but a Thalesian Substance.
Lee’s approach is a dialectical integration: she is anti-postmodern in her search for an absolute Origin, yet pro-postmodern in her fluidity across genres and boundaries. She fills the void left by the death of the avant-garde with the "Simple, Profound, and Beautiful" reality of the Origin.
As the artist articulates, this Origin is not static but "infinitely dynamic, penetrating concrete forms to transform them." The exhibition IN THE BEGINNING heralds this new aesthetic experiment. From the primordial joy of Edenic Delight to the Cosmic Wrath of Universal Evil, Lee traverses the spectrum of being. Ultimately, in works like Atonement (At-one-ment) and Ich und Du, we witness her profound yearning to bridge the Interstice between existence and the Origin—a pursuit of the ultimate communion.

One-ness

대조적으로 < 가인의 길(way of Cain) >, < 왜곡(歪曲)의 탑(tower of distortion) >, < 보편적 악(universal evil) >, < 우주적 분노(cosmic wrath) >에서 작가는 근원적 실재에서 벗어나 빗나감으로써 생긴 보편적인 악을 어떤 거대한 분노의 분출로 보고 있을 것이다.
< 사이(between) >, < 결연(結緣, relation) >, < 나와 너(Ich und Du >, < 궁극의 추구(pursuit of the ultimatum) >에서는 실존과 근원 < 사이 >에 벌어진 틈새를 메워(< 결연 >) 하나 안에서(< 나와 너 >) 소통하고자 하는(< 속죄 >,
