1. Altitude 750m: The Battlefield
My studio is not a sanctuary of peace, but a battlefield. In the winter woods of Yeongwol, where every living thing holds its breath at -15°C, I witness thickets standing like dry bones. They are not mere landscapes; they are naked portraits of the "Human Situation," facing a harsh destiny. I do not paint peace here; I record the fierce resistance that refuses to break even amidst agony.
2. "Iron Lines" Guarded by Aluminum Nozzles
Abandoning the soft brush, I grasp a rigid aluminum nozzle. The stubbornness of this metal serves as an armored escort for my Jung-bong (Central Tip) as it pierces the earth of the canvas. The ashen paint squeezed from the tube is not mere color; it is the spine of existence driven by every muscle of my body, a pipe of life through which blood flows. Just as Chusa tore through paper with his brush tip, I tear through the void of this era with these Iron Lines.
3. MAQOM: The Interstice of an "Outcry," Not Silence
The slender Interstice (Bi-baek) between thicket and thicket, between mass and mass, is not a vacant space. It is "MAQOM (The Sacred Place)," where the prophetic voice described by Abraham Joshua Heschel erupts. The bruised traces created by countless strokes and scrapings with a knife are not failed erasures. They are the site of Bi-baek, where past and present collide—a demilitarized zone where the divine breath (Ruah) surges. In this interstice, the viewer will encounter not a serene rest, but the scream of an original being crying out for life.
4. A Mirror Reflecting the Existence of the Era
Beyond a personal chronicle, my large-scale works are mirrors reflecting the loneliness and resistance of this era. The densely intertwined ashen swirls symbolize the suffocating pressure we face, yet the powerful Iron Line piercing through them is Nietzsche's affirmation: "Nevertheless, one must live." Through this army of thickets, I reenact Ezekiel's miracle on the canvas at every moment—where dry bones gain the breath of life and rise.
