Biography

Jaikyung Lee (b. 1960) is a South Korean abstract artist whose work serves as a visceral record of human existence amidst the shifting paradigms of the modern era. For over 40 years, Lee has explored the ontological essence of "ONE-NESS," a journey that has recently culminated in a radical physical and spiritual migration.

In 2024, Lee moved her studio to a remote wilderness at an altitude of 750 meters in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province. Immersed in the harsh sub-zero winters, she transitioned from the meditative serenity of her previous works to a series of fierce, "resistant" expressions titled MAQOM: The Chronicles of Resistance.

Influenced by the philosophy of Abraham Joshua Heschel's "Human Situation" and Martin Heidegger’s "Being and Time," Lee’s current practice is an act of prophetic witnessing. Rejecting the docility of the traditional brush, she utilizes the rigid aluminum nozzles of paint tubes to drive "iron lines" directly into raw burlap. This technique, rooted in the calligraphic principle of Jung-bong (Central Tip), manifests as three-dimensional scars of light and shadow.

Her work focuses on the Interstice (Bi-baek)—the sacred gaps between dense masses of gray where the "Ruah" (divine breath) resides. In an age of seamless digital replication, Lee’s thick, intertwined textures stand as a defiant testament to the unyielding human spirit.

이재경(1960년생)은 현대 사회의 변해가는 패러다임 속에서 인간 존재의 생생한 기록을 그리는 대한민국의 추상 화가이다. 40년이 넘는 시간 동안 그녀는 '하나-됨(ONE-NESS)'의 존재론적 본질을 탐구해 왔으며, 이 여정은 최근 근원적인 물리적·정신적 이주를 통해 정점에 달했다.

2024년, 이재경은 강원도 영월의 해발 750미터 오지 산속으로 작업실을 옮겼다. 영하의 혹독한 겨울 속에 몰입한 그녀는 이전 작업의 명상적인 평온함에서 벗어나, 'MAQOM(마콤): 저항의 연대기'라는 제목의 격정적인 '저항적' 표현으로 전환했다.

아브라함 요슈아 헤셀의 '인간 상황'과 마르틴 하이데거의 '존재와 시간'에 영향을 받은 이재경의 현재 작업은 예언자적 증언의 행위이다. 전통적인 붓의 유순함을 거부하고, 그는 물감 튜브의 단단한 알루미늄 노즐을 사용하여 거친 황마 대지 위로 '철선(鐵線)'을 직접 내리박는다. 서예의 중봉(中鋒) 원리에 뿌리를 둔 이 기법은 빛과 그림자의 입체적인 흉터로 나타난다.

그의 작업은 틈새(비백, 飛白)에 집중한다. 이는 잿빛 덩어리들 사이, '루아흐(신의 호흡)'가 머무는 거룩한 공간이다. 모든 것이 매끄럽게 디지털로 복제되는 시대에, 이재경의 두텁고 얽힌 질감은 꺾이지 않는 인간 정신에 대한 단호한 증거로 서 있다.
